Rust is the number-one enemy of classic cars, and sheet metal replacement is often the most labor-intensive phase of a restoration. Quality reproduction panels have transformed what's possible — cars that would have been scrapped twenty years ago can now be brought back with factory-correct stamped steel.
Original factory panels were typically stamped from 18-gauge to 20-gauge cold-rolled steel. Quality reproduction manufacturers match this specification. Beware of cheaper imports using thinner-gauge material — they may require additional work to achieve proper fit and won't carry the structural rigidity of the original.
Electro-Deposition Primer (EDP) coated panels arrive with a factory-applied rust-preventive coating that protects during shipping and storage. Bare steel panels are less expensive but require immediate treatment with a metal conditioner and primer to prevent flash rust. If your panel will sit before installation, EDP is worth the premium.
