Soda Blasting vs Sand Blasting
Stripping paint and rust from a classic car body or parts is the first step in any paint-and-body restoration. The two most common methods are soda blasting (using sodium bicarbonate as the abrasive media) and sand blasting (a general term covering silica sand, aluminum oxide, garnet, and other hard abrasive media). The choice between them depends on what you are stripping, how aggressive the removal needs to be, and how much you can afford to risk warping thin sheet metal.
Soda Blasting
Soda blasting uses finely ground sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) propelled by compressed air. The media is soft — about 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale compared to 7 for silica sand and 9 for aluminum oxide. This softness is the key advantage: soda removes paint, light rust, undercoating, and surface contamination without etching the base metal, warping thin panels, or creating a rough surface profile.
For full-body strip-downs where the car is being taken to bare metal for a complete repaint, soda blasting is the preferred choice among professional restoration shops. It strips paint from an entire body in hours without the panel distortion that hard abrasive blasting can cause. It is also safe for use around glass, chrome, and rubber seals (though protecting these items is still best practice).
The limitation is that soda blasting does not remove heavy rust or leave a significant surface profile. After soda blasting, the bare metal needs a conversion coating or self-etching primer immediately — the smooth surface does not provide the mechanical tooth that hard abrasive media creates for primer adhesion.
Sand Blasting (Hard Abrasive Media)
Hard abrasive blasting — using aluminum oxide, garnet, or glass bead — is significantly more aggressive than soda. It removes heavy rust, mill scale, old body filler, and multi-layer coatings that soda cannot touch. The resulting surface profile (the microscopic peaks and valleys etched into the metal) provides excellent mechanical adhesion for primers and coatings.
The trade-off is aggressiveness. Hard media generates heat through friction and imparts peening stress to the panel surface. On thin sheet metal (18-gauge and thinner), this combination causes warping — the panel oil-cans, ripples, or distorts. Skilled operators mitigate this by keeping the gun moving, using lower pressure, and working in short bursts, but the risk is always present on thin panels.
Aluminum Oxide Blasting Media (50 lb)
Multi-use hard abrasive media for rust, scale, and coating removal. Reusable for multiple sessions. Safer than silica sand.
When to Use Each
Use soda for full body strips where panel distortion must be avoided, for stripping paint from aluminum panels (hoods, deck lids on some classics), and for cleaning soft metals and delicate surfaces. Use hard abrasive media for heavily rusted parts, thick scale removal, prepping structural components for coating, and any application where a rough surface profile is desired for coating adhesion.
Many restorations use both: soda blast the body shell and aluminum panels, then hard-abrasive blast the suspension, frame, and structural components that need aggressive cleaning and a primer-ready profile.
The Verdict
Soda blasting is the body-safe choice — gentle on thin metal, no warping risk, clean results. Hard abrasive blasting is the brute-force choice — removes everything, leaves a primer-ready profile, but risks warping thin panels. For most restorations, the answer is both: soda for the body, hard media for the chassis and parts. Choose based on what you are stripping, not on a blanket preference.
