Manual vs Power Steering Conversion
Parking a classic car with manual steering and bias-ply tires is an upper-body workout. At speed, manual steering feels connected and communicative. At a standstill, it requires genuine physical effort. Power steering conversion eliminates the effort while adding complexity and cost. Whether the trade-off is worth it depends entirely on how you use your classic.
Keeping Manual Steering
A properly rebuilt and adjusted manual steering box provides excellent steering feel and adequate effort at driving speeds. The heavy steering that owners complain about is usually at parking speeds and during tight low-speed maneuvers. On the highway, a manual box with correct adjustment (no play at center, smooth operation through the full range) feels direct and connected in a way that power steering does not replicate.
Manual steering is also simpler and lighter. There is no pump to maintain, no fluid to check, no hoses to leak, and no parasitic engine load. For lightweight classics, sports cars, and cars that are primarily highway-driven, manual steering is perfectly adequate and arguably preferable for driving engagement.
Upgrading to radial tires significantly reduces steering effort compared to bias-ply, even with a manual box. If parking effort is your primary complaint, switching to radials may solve the problem without a power steering conversion.
Power Steering Conversion Options
Hydraulic conversion: The traditional approach. A belt-driven hydraulic pump bolts to the engine, pressurized fluid flows through hoses to a power steering gear box (or a rack and pinion), and a reservoir holds the fluid. Hydraulic systems provide strong, consistent assist and are well-proven. The downsides are complexity (pump, bracket, hoses, reservoir, belt, fluid), parasitic engine load (the pump runs constantly, absorbing 2 to 5 horsepower whether you are turning the wheel or not), and the potential for leaks and maintenance issues.
Electric power steering (EPS): The modern alternative. An electric motor mounts to the steering column or steering shaft and provides assist through a direct-drive mechanism. EPS eliminates all hydraulic components — no pump, no hoses, no fluid, no belt. It draws power only when steering assist is needed, eliminating parasitic load. Assist level is often tunable, allowing you to dial in the amount of road feel you prefer. The downsides are higher kit cost and the need for clean electrical power (some EPS units are sensitive to voltage fluctuations on vintage electrical systems).

Steering Geometry and Alignment
A power steering conversion can change the steering ratio if you switch from a manual steering box to a power box with a faster ratio. Manual boxes typically run 20:1 to 24:1 (turns lock-to-lock), while power boxes run 14:1 to 17:1. A faster ratio means fewer turns of the wheel for the same amount of tire deflection — the car feels quicker and more responsive, but also more sensitive to steering inputs at highway speed. After any steering box swap, a professional front-end alignment is mandatory to set toe, caster, and camber to the specifications for the new geometry. Incorrect alignment after a box swap causes tire wear, pulling, and wandering that can be mistaken for a defective installation.
Electric power steering kits that mount to the existing steering column or intermediate shaft do not change the steering ratio — they add assist to the existing mechanical ratio, preserving the original steering geometry while reducing effort. This is one of the underappreciated advantages of EPS over hydraulic box swaps.
The Verdict
If your classic is a daily driver, a tow vehicle, or if parking in tight spaces is a regular occurrence, power steering is a quality-of-life upgrade that is hard to argue against. Electric power steering is the modern choice — cleaner installation, tunable assist, no parasitic load. If your classic is a weekend cruiser that lives on open roads, or if driving feel and simplicity are your priorities, a rebuilt manual box with radial tires delivers a satisfying driving experience without the added complexity. Both are valid — choose based on how and where you drive.
