The Case for Keeping the Carburetor
A properly rebuilt and jetted carburetor is a perfectly functional fueling system. Millions of classic cars ran on carburetors for decades, and a well-tuned four-barrel on a stock or mildly modified engine delivers excellent performance and reasonable fuel economy. Carburetors are simple to understand, easy to rebuild with basic hand tools, and parts are universally available. For a factory-correct restoration, there is no substitute.
The carburetor's limitations show up in specific conditions: cold starting (especially with automatic chokes that need adjustment), altitude changes (fixed jetting is optimized for one elevation), and hot-soak restarts (vapor lock). Most kits include everything except the fuel system modifications and O2 bung.

The actual throttle body install is a bolt-on — remove the carburetor, install the EFI on the same manifold flange, connect the wiring, and do the initial setup on the handheld controller.

EFI systems running closed-loop with an O2 sensor produce cleaner exhaust emissions than a fixed-jet carburetor, which can matter in states with emissions testing for vintage vehicles. The ability to run at stoichiometric air-fuel ratio during cruise also means the engine produces less carbon buildup on valves and spark plugs. With ethanol-blended fuel becoming universal, EFI adapts its fuel maps automatically to compensate for the lower energy content of E10 and E15 — carburetors cannot, requiring manual rejetting if fuel composition changes significantly.
