Electronic Ignition vs Points
Breaker points were the standard ignition trigger mechanism on every car built before the mid-1970s. They work, but they wear. The rubbing block that rides the distributor cam lobe erodes, changing the point gap and the ignition timing. The contact surfaces pit from electrical arcing, increasing resistance and weakening the spark. Every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, you need to pull the distributor cap, set the point gap, adjust the timing, and eventually replace the points and condenser. How Points Work
Breaker points are a mechanically operated switch inside the distributor. A cam lobe on the distributor shaft pushes a rubbing block that opens and closes the point contacts. When the points open, the collapsing magnetic field in the ignition coil generates a high-voltage spark that travels through the distributor cap and rotor to the correct spark plug. The timing of this spark is determined by the mechanical relationship between the cam lobe, the rubbing block, and the point gap.
The system works well when everything is fresh and properly adjusted. The problem is that it degrades continuously. The rubbing block wears, changing the gap. The contact faces pit from electrical arcing, increasing resistance. The condenser (which absorbs the voltage spike that would otherwise destroy the points) weakens over time. The result is a system that requires periodic attention to maintain performance.
How Electronic Ignition Works
Electronic ignition replaces the mechanical points with a solid-state trigger — typically a Hall effect sensor or an optical sensor — that detects the distributor position without physical contact. There is no rubbing block to wear, no contact surfaces to pit, and no condenser to fail. The trigger signal is amplified by a module that switches the coil on and off with precise, repeatable timing.
