DIY Paint Booth Setup and Safety
Automotive paintwork defines a restoration. It is also the most dangerous step if done without proper containment and ventilation. Automotive paints contain volatile organic compounds, flammable solvents, and in the case of two-component clear coats, isocyanates — a class of chemicals that can cause permanent lung damage and sensitization with even brief exposure. A DIY paint booth built correctly keeps you safe, delivers professional-quality finishes, and keeps your neighbors from calling the fire department.
This guide covers building a functional paint booth in a standard two-car garage. We will address ventilation, fire safety, lighting, filtration, and personal protective equipment.
Choosing Your Booth Style
There are three practical approaches for the home restorer:
Cross-draft booth: The most common DIY setup. Air enters through intake filters on one end of the booth and exits through an exhaust fan on the opposite end. The airflow moves horizontally across the work surface. This is the easiest and least expensive to build, and it works well for most classic car paintwork.
Semi-downdraft booth: Air enters from the ceiling area, flows diagonally downward across the car, and exits through wall-mounted exhaust filters near the floor on the opposite end. This produces better results than a pure cross-draft because it pushes overspray down and away from wet surfaces. Slightly more complex to build but achievable with ceiling-mounted intake plenums.
Portable/collapsible booth: A framework of PVC pipe or metal conduit with plastic sheeting walls. Can be assembled for paint days and broken down for normal garage use. This is the budget option and works acceptably for small projects or single-panel work.

Ventilation Design
Ventilation is the core safety system. Without adequate airflow, solvent vapors accumulate to explosive concentrations in seconds. The target is 100 linear feet per minute of air velocity through the booth cross-section.
For a 10-foot wide by 8-foot tall booth opening, the cross-section is 80 square feet. At 100 feet per minute, you need 8,000 CFM of exhaust capacity. Round up to 10,000 CFM to account for filter resistance. A single 24-inch direct-drive exhaust fan delivers roughly 5,000 to 7,000 CFM; two fans or a 36-inch fan covers most home booths.
The exhaust fan must be rated for use in explosive atmospheres. Look for labels that say "explosion-proof" or "spark-resistant" — standard box fans and bathroom exhaust fans are not rated for solvent vapor environments and can ignite fumes. The motor should be outside the airstream or totally enclosed.
Intake and Exhaust Filtration
The intake side of the booth uses filter media to remove dust and debris from incoming air. Polyester ceiling-grid filters or purpose-built booth intake filters work well. The exhaust side uses paint arrestor filters — accordion-folded paper or fiberglass media that captures overspray particles before the air exits the building. Exhaust filters protect your fan, prevent overspray from leaving the building, and are required by air quality regulations in most areas.
Replace exhaust filters when they become visibly loaded with paint. A clogged filter restricts airflow, reducing booth velocity below safe levels and degrading finish quality.
Lighting
Good lighting is critical for achieving a quality finish. You need even, shadow-free illumination across the entire car surface to see orange peel, runs, and dry spots in real time. Standard fluorescent shop lights work, but they must be rated for use in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations (areas where flammable vapors may be present). Enclosed-lens fluorescent fixtures with gasketed covers meet this requirement.
LED vapor-tight fixtures are the modern choice — they are brighter, more energy-efficient, and inherently cooler-running than fluorescent tubes. Mount them outside the booth walls behind clear polycarbonate panels, or use fixtures explicitly rated for hazardous locations.
Position lights on both side walls at roughly door-handle height and overhead. Aim for a minimum of 100 foot-candles at the work surface. The more light, the better your ability to spot defects while the paint is still wet and correctable.

Fire Safety
A paint booth concentrates flammable vapors in a confined space. Fire safety is not optional — it is the difference between a successful paint day and a catastrophic garage fire.
- Keep a minimum 10-pound ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher within arm's reach of the spray position at all times.
- No open flames, pilot lights, or hot work within 50 feet of the booth during spraying and for at least 30 minutes after.
- Turn off gas water heaters and gas furnaces that share the garage space before spraying. Their pilot lights are ignition sources.
- Ground the spray gun, the car body, and the booth frame to a common ground point to prevent static discharge.
- Do not store solvents, thinners, or paint materials inside the booth. Keep them in a separate, ventilated storage area or a flammables cabinet.
Personal Protective Equipment
At minimum, every spray session requires a properly fitted respirator with organic vapor cartridges (for single-stage paints) or a supplied-air system (for 2K clear coats), chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, minimum), a paint suit or coveralls to keep overspray off your skin and clothes, and eye protection (a full-face respirator covers this).
Cartridge respirators have a service life — OV cartridges typically last 8 to 40 hours of use depending on vapor concentration. If you smell solvent through the mask, the cartridges are spent. Replace them immediately. Write the install date on the cartridge with a marker.
Building the Booth: Materials List
A basic cross-draft booth in a two-car garage requires 6-mil polyethylene sheeting for walls and ceiling, painter's tape and spring clamps for securing the poly, a 24-inch or 36-inch explosion-proof exhaust fan, intake filter media for the opposite wall, exhaust paint arrestor filters for the fan side, an extension cord rated for the fan amperage (12 AWG minimum for 24-inch fans), and duct tape for sealing seams.
Frame the booth with PVC pipe (1-inch or 1.5-inch), metal conduit, or simply tape the poly sheeting to ceiling joists and wall studs. Leave the intake end open with filter media stretched across the opening. The exhaust fan mounts in a cut-out on the opposite wall or in the garage door opening with plywood and filter media surrounding it.
