A classic that sits between drives ages its battery faster than a daily driver does. Modern electrical loads (clocks, alarms, computer memory) continue drawing small currents even when the car is off, gradually discharging the battery. Combined with the normal self-discharge of any lead-acid battery, a car that sits for weeks often greets you with a dead battery on the day you want to drive. Correct storage practices prevent this and extend battery life significantly.

Battery Tenders — The Standard Solution

A battery tender (also called a battery maintainer) is a small charger designed to keep a battery at optimal charge indefinitely. Unlike a standard charger, a tender monitors battery voltage and switches between charge modes automatically — bulk charge when needed, float when full, and desulfation cycles to reverse sulfate buildup. Tenders are the single most impactful investment in classic-car battery life.

For a car that sits between drives, a smart tender connected during storage is a set-and-forget solution. Battery reaches full charge, holds float indefinitely, and the car starts on the first crank whenever you want to drive.

Battery Disconnect Switches

For cars stored for months at a time or without access to shore power for a tender, a battery disconnect switch eliminates the parasitic drain from clocks, radios, and other always-on systems. Disconnect switches install between the battery negative terminal and the ground cable, with a knob or key that opens the circuit.

Trade-offs: disconnected batteries still self-discharge (slowly), so a battery left disconnected for a very long period still needs recharging before use. Clock and radio settings lose their memory. Some modern aftermarket ECUs or ignition systems don't like intermittent power loss. For most classic-car applications, disconnect switches are a clean solution.

Terminal and Cable Care

  1. Clean corrosion regularly. White or green corrosion on battery terminals is sulfation from acid vapor. Wire brush the terminals to bright copper, then apply anti-corrosion terminal spray or a light coat of petroleum jelly. Corrosion reduces electrical connection quality and eventually prevents starting.
  2. Inspect cables for damage. Battery cables corrode inside the insulation over decades. If starting becomes weak despite a good battery and clean terminals, check cable resistance — a voltmeter across the cable from battery post to starter post should show near-zero drop under crank load. Meaningful voltage drop indicates internal cable corrosion; replace the cable.
  3. Verify ground connections. Body-to-frame ground straps, engine-to-frame ground straps, and battery-to-body grounds all deteriorate over decades. Poor grounds cause weird electrical symptoms (dim lights, slow crank, erratic gauge behavior) that mimic battery problems. Clean and re-terminate.
  4. Tight but not overtorqued. Battery terminal clamps should be snug but not crushed. Overtorqued clamps can crack the battery case at the post; undertorqued produce intermittent electrical connection.

Storage in Cold Weather

Cold reduces battery capacity — a fully charged battery at 0°F delivers only about 65% of its rated cranking amps at 80°F. This affects starting on very cold days. More significantly, a discharged or partially charged battery can freeze at cold temperatures — the water in the electrolyte freezes and can crack the case, ending the battery. A fully charged battery has enough dissolved acid to resist freezing well below 0°F; a discharged battery can freeze at temperatures near normal freezing.

For outdoor cold storage: full charge before storage, either connected to a tender or with a disconnect switch. For indoor storage: the same, but with less urgency about freeze protection. Check charge periodically through the storage season.

Never charge a frozen batteryAttempting to charge a battery with frozen electrolyte can rupture the case violently. If a battery has been at freezing temperatures and won't accept charge, allow it to warm to room temperature over 24+ hours before charging. If the case shows swelling or damage, the battery is done — replace.
