Best Classic Car Battery Options
The original battery in your classic car was a conventional flooded lead-acid unit — functional but prone to leaking, gassing, and requiring regular maintenance. Modern AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries offer sealed, maintenance-free operation with better vibration resistance and longer service life. For classics that sit for extended periods between drives, choosing the right battery and maintainer is critical to avoiding the dead-battery ritual every spring.
AGM Batteries — The Standard Upgrade
Odyssey Extreme Series (Group 34)
Odyssey's Extreme Series uses pure lead plates (TPPL technology) manufactured by EnerSys, delivering higher cranking power and deeper cycling capability than conventional AGM batteries. The Group 34 size fits many classic American V8 applications. Higher upfront cost, but longer service life and better deep-cycle performance make it cost-effective over time.
Optima RedTop (Group 34/78)
Optima's SpiralCell design provides excellent vibration resistance — important for classics without modern engine-mount isolation. The dual-terminal Group 34/78 accommodates both top-post and side-post connections common in GM vehicles. The RedTop is a starting battery; choose the YellowTop for dual-purpose deep-cycle applications.
6-Volt Applications
Pre-1955 American cars and many early imports used 6-volt electrical systems. Finding a quality 6-volt battery is more difficult than 12-volt, but Optima, Interstate, and specialty suppliers still produce them. Alternatively, some restorers convert to 12-volt systems for improved starting, brighter lights, and better compatibility with modern accessories — though this requires replacing or modifying the generator/alternator, voltage regulator, coil, and potentially the gauge cluster.

A battery maintainer is essential for any classic car that sits for weeks or months between drives. Installation Tips
When upgrading from a flooded to an AGM battery, ensure the charging system is compatible. Most classic car generators and alternators with external voltage regulators work fine with AGM batteries, but the voltage regulator may need adjustment. AGM batteries prefer a charging voltage of 14.4-14.8V — if your regulator is set significantly higher, it can overcharge and damage the battery. A simple multimeter check across the battery terminals at idle confirms your charging voltage.
If the car will sit for more than a month without a maintainer, disconnect the negative battery cable. This prevents parasitic draws from clocks, computer memories (on later classics), and other small loads from slowly draining the battery.
