The choice comes down to durability requirements, color options, heat exposure, and whether you need to do the work yourself or send it out. When to Powder Coat
Powder coating is the clear winner for parts that need maximum durability in harsh environments: suspension components, subframes, brake brackets, chassis parts, engine bay brackets, and anything that lives under the car. The cured film is thicker and harder than most paints, resists stone chips from road debris, and shrugs off brake fluid, gasoline, and cleaning chemicals that would damage conventional paint.
Powder coating is also ideal for parts that can be removed and oven-cured: valve covers, air cleaner housings, fan shrouds, intake manifolds (if not exposed to excessive heat), and accessory brackets.
