6V vs 12V: Should You Convert?
Classic cars built before the mid-1950s came with 6-volt electrical systems. By 1956, most American manufacturers had switched to 12 volts. If you own a 6V classic — early Fords, Chevrolets, Dodges, and most pre-1955 American cars — you face a choice: keep the original 6V system or convert to 12V. Each option has legitimate arguments, and the right choice depends on how you use the car.
Why Convert to 12V
The practical advantages of 12V are significant for driven classics. Starters spin faster, which is especially noticeable in cold weather where 6V systems struggle to turn a cold engine. Headlights are dramatically brighter — a safety improvement that matters if you drive at night. And the accessory market is entirely 12V: radios, USB chargers, LED driving lights, electric fans, and fuel pumps are all designed for 12V systems.
Charging is also more reliable. A modern internally-regulated alternator produces more output at idle than a 6V generator produces at cruising speed, and it does so without the maintenance and adjustment that generators require. For a car driven in stop-and-go traffic or city conditions, the alternator's idle-speed output alone justifies the conversion.

Why Keep 6V
Originality is the primary reason to stay at 6V. For concours restorations, correct-era shows, and historically significant vehicles, a 12V conversion is a modification that detracts from the car's authenticity. The 6V generator, regulator, and correct wiring are part of the car's original engineering.
A properly functioning 6V system is adequate for normal driving. Quality 6V bulbs (halogen upgrades are available in 6V), a well-maintained generator with a properly adjusted regulator, and clean connections throughout the system deliver acceptable performance. The key is clean connections — 6V systems are more sensitive to voltage drop from corroded terminals and loose grounds because there is less voltage to spare.
The Conversion Process
A basic 6V to 12V conversion involves replacing the generator with a 12V alternator (one-wire alternators in generator-style housings maintain the stock appearance), installing a 12V battery, swapping the ignition coil for a 12V unit, replacing all light bulbs with 12V equivalents, and replacing the voltage regulator (or eliminating it if using an internally regulated alternator).
The starter motor is a judgment call. Most 6V starters function on 12V — they spin faster and draw more current, but they work. Replacing with a 12V starter is cleaner but adds cost. Gauges that use voltage-sensitive bimetallic movements (fuel gauge, temperature gauge) may read inaccurately at 12V — a resistor in the gauge circuit drops the voltage back to 6V for the sending units.
Wiring and Ground Considerations
Whether you stay at 6V or convert to 12V, clean electrical connections are essential. A 6V system has only 6 volts to work with, so every tenth of a volt lost to a corroded ground or a loose terminal is a meaningful percentage of the total — dimmer lights, slower cranking, weaker spark. Clean every ground connection to bare metal, add a supplemental ground strap from the engine block to the frame, and use dielectric grease on every terminal to prevent future corrosion. If you convert to 12V, these same practices apply and the system benefits from lower current flow (half the amperage for the same wattage), which reduces voltage drop across existing wiring and connections. A 12V system is inherently more tolerant of marginal connections, but cleaning them up costs nothing and pays dividends in reliability regardless of voltage.
The Verdict
If you drive your pre-1955 classic regularly, convert to 12V. The improvements in starting, lighting, charging, and accessory compatibility make the car significantly more usable and safer. If originality is your priority and the car is a show piece or historically significant, keep the 6V system maintained and enjoy the authentic experience. The conversion is reversible if you change your mind — all the original components can be reinstalled.
